. . . During the last six weeks cholera HAS hit the camps in Anse-a-Pitres.  And cholera is crossing the border into the Dominican Republic once again.

Haitian doctors and nurses on the Haitian-Dominican border have recently complained that they do not have enough IV fluid to treat their cholera patients. And their patients are dying.

A liter of intravenous Ringer’s Lactate in the United States costs $1 US.

Humanitarian: Relocation of Returnees from DR is Underway

haitilibre.com - April 15, 2016

About 374 of the 587 families living in six temporary sites have already received their grant for the relocation. Some 2,300 returnees from the Dominican Republic who lived in precarious conditions in six makeshift camps in Anse-a-Pitres have received assistance for their relocation in areas of their choice. Implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in collaboration with the Delegation of the Southeast Department, OCHA and the whole community, this relocation program aims to close the 6 temporary sites where populations returning from the Dominican Republic have settled since July 2015.

This program is inspired on the relocation program of internally displaced people that the IOM developed following the 2010 earthquake. It is executed in accordance with the Government policy to avoid developing sites and camps on Haitian territory for returnees and deported people, without losing sight of the protection and dignity of those affected by the binational mixed migration crisis.

Mortality Rates during Cholera Epidemic, Haiti, 2010–2011
extract:
"The 2010 cholera epidemic in Haiti was one of the largest cholera epidemics ever recorded. To estimate the magnitude of the death toll during the first wave of the epidemic, we retrospectively conducted surveys at 4 sites in the northern part of Haiti. Overall, 70,903 participants were included; at all sites, the crude mortality rates (19.1–35.4 deaths/1,000 person-years) were higher than the expected baseline mortality rate for Haiti (9 deaths/1,000 person-years). This finding represents an excess of 3,406 deaths (2.9-fold increase) for the 4.4% of the Haiti population covered by these surveys, suggesting a substantially higher cholera mortality rate than previously reported"

Unless my translation is wrong, the latest GoH bulletin http://bit.ly/2bIvJEUclaims "For the 3rd week of August, which is the 32nd epidemiological week of the pandemic in Haiti, 596 deaths were recorded for the current year".

The January 10, 2016 http://bit.ly/1TbJZCT MSPP figure states 9,163 cholera deaths to date. Add the 596 new deaths for this year to August and we should have 9,759 deaths roughly to this August but the MSPP claim a figure of only 9,381 cumulative deaths to date. http://bit.ly/2bswJg7 July 31, 2016
